It is disappointing, then, that “Burying the Ex,” Mr. Dante’s first feature in six years, finds the filmmaker far from his creative heights.

Dante’s newest movie, Burying the Ex, doesn’t make the leap to satire. It has a lame-pun title, a zombie premise that might have seemed fresh two decades ago, and the sexual politics of an unusually backward adolescent male horror nerd. For all that, it’s a lot of fun, and Dante’s heart is palpably in it.

The movie's chief currencies are thinly veiled metaphors and beautiful women who care way too much about losers that don't deserve them. It has some modest charm to it but lags well behind most modern horror comedies.
