Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film (2006)

Image

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489062/

Terrific little documentary which traces the evolution of the slasher subgenre. It is informative and entertaining. The starting point is John Carpenter's seminal "Halloween", with quick looks into older films like "Psycho" and 'Bay of Blood", and the current flock of new slashers. In the documentary, you will see most of the directors that are associated with these kinds of films talk about how they really feel about a much-maligned movie subngre. You will also see endless clips of the most popular and interesting slashers film of the 1970s, 1980s and beyond (anything from "When a Stranger Calls", "Prom Night" and "Pieces", to "The Silence of the Lambs" and "Scream"). The program addresses the claims that this type of movie is inherently misogynic and amoral. For example, the film shows parts of an old 'Siskel & Ebert' program that was dedicated to belittle the slasher subgenre; this in another example of the rampant elitism in film criticism. Not long ago, Bill O'Reilly said that only sick people would want to see movies like "Saw" and "Hills Have Eyes", and his comments reminded me that there are still people out-there who simply do not get it. What I like about this documentary is that it does not preach but explains why slashers appeal to a vast majority of horror aficionados. The documentary does omit a few important titles, but overall, this is an effective dissection (no pun intended) of a type of film. Highly recommended to horror fans.

Punk's not dead (2007)

Image

Director:
Susan Dynner

Punk's Not Dead is a 2007 documentary film directed by Susan Dynner, an American hardcore punk fan. The film claims to infiltrate American clubs, malls, recording studios, etc where it sets out to claim hardcore punk and pop punk music is "thriving" from an American perspective. Its content features performances largely from, 1980s hardcore bands and MTV skate punk and pop punk/rock acts. It also includes various interviews and behind-the-scenes footage with the bands, labels and fans.

The God Who Wasn't There (2005)

Image

Director:
Brian Flemming

Peace, love & fate/hate.

Documentary filmmaker Brian Flemming examines the Bible and discusses the history of early Christianity, raising doubts as to whether the New Testament personage Jesus ever really existed. Flemming examines the similarity of the Jesus story to other savior myths of the time and points to inexplicable gaps in early Christian history that combine to shed doubt on the Bible's Jesus story.

Included:Two full-length alternate audio tracks with commentary from evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins (A Devil's Chaplain), scholar Earl Doherty (The Jesus Puzzle) and popular blogger The Raving Atheist (ravingatheist.com)

Philosophy of a Knife (2008) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0961119/

Image
The true history of Japanese Unit 731, from it's beginnings in the 1930's to it's demise in 1945, and the subsequent trials in Khabarovsk, USSR, of many of the Japanese doctors from Unit 731. The facts are told, and previously unknown evidence is revealed by an eyewitness to these events, former doctor and military translator, Anatoly Protasov. Part documentary and part feature, the story is shown from the perspective of a young Japanese nurse who witnessed many of horrors, and a young Japanese officer who is torn between his sincere convictions that he is serving the greater purpose, and the deep sympathy he feels for an imprisoned Russian girl. His life is a living hell as he's compelled to carry out atrocious experiments on the other prisoners, using them as guinea pigs in this shocking tale of mankind's barbarity. Philosophy of a knife is truly one of the most violent, brutal and harrowing movies ever made.

Unit 731, njihove aktivnosti i eksperimenti, quote s wikipedije - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731
A special project code-named Maruta used human beings for experiments. Test subjects were gathered from the surrounding population and were sometimes referred to euphemistically as "logs" (丸太, maruta?). This term originated as a joke on the part of the staff due to the fact that the official cover story for the facility given to the local authorities was that it was a lumber mill. The test subjects were selected to give a wide cross section of the population, and included common criminals, captured bandits and anti-Japanese partisans, political prisoners, and also people rounded up by the secret police for alleged "suspicious activities" and included infants, the elderly, and pregnant women.

Vivisection

* Prisoners of war were subjected to vivisection without anesthesia.
* Vivisections were performed on prisoners after infecting them with various diseases. Scientists performed invasive surgery on prisoners, removing organs to study the effects of disease on the human body. These were conducted while the patients were alive because it was feared that the decomposition process would affect the results. The infected and vivisected prisoners included men, women, children, and infants.
* Vivisections were also performed on pregnant women, sometimes impregnated by doctors, and the fetus removed.
* Prisoners had limbs amputated in order to study blood loss.
* Those limbs that were removed were sometimes re-attached to the opposite sides of the body.
* Some prisoners' limbs were frozen and amputated, while others had limbs frozen then thawed to study the effects of the resultant untreated gangrene and rotting.
* Some prisoners had their stomachs surgically removed and the esophagus reattached to the intestines.
* Parts of the brain, lungs, liver, etc. were removed from some prisoners.

In 2007, Doctor Ken Yuasa testified to the Japan Times that "I was afraid during my first vivisection, but the second time around, it was much easier. By the third time, I was willing to do it." He believes at least 1,000 persons, including surgeons, were involved in vivisections over mainland China.

Weapons testing

* Human targets were used to test grenades positioned at various distances and in different positions.
* Flame throwers were tested on humans.
* Humans were tied to stakes and used as targets to test germ-releasing bombs, chemical weapons and explosive bombs.

Germ warfare attacks

* Prisoners were injected with inoculations of disease, disguised as vaccinations, to study their effects.
* To study the effects of untreated venereal diseases, male and female prisoners were deliberately infected with syphilis and gonorrhea, then studied.
* Prisoners were infested with fleas in order to acquire large quantities of disease-carrying fleas for the purposes of studying the viability of germ warfare.
* Plague fleas, infected clothing, and infected supplies encased in bombs were dropped on various targets. The resulting cholera, anthrax, and plague were estimated to have killed around 200,000 Chinese civilians.
* Tularemia was tested on Chinese civilians.
* Unit 731 and its affiliated units (Unit 1644, Unit 100, et cetera) were actively involved not only in research and development, but also in experimental deployment of epidemic-creating biowarfare weapons in assaults against the Chinese populace (both civilian and military) throughout World War II. Plague-infested fleas, bred in the laboratories of Unit 731 and Unit 1644, were spread by low-flying airplanes upon Chinese cities, coastal Ningbo in 1940, and Changde, Hunan Province, in 1941. This military aerial spraying killed thousands of people with bubonic plague epidemics.

Other experiments

Prisoners were subjected to other experiments such as:

* being hung upside down to see how long it would take for them to choke to death.
* having air injected into their arteries to determine the time until the onset of embolism.
* having horse urine injected into their kidneys.
* being deprived of food and water to determine the length of time until death.
* being placed into high-pressure chambers until death.
* being exposed to extreme temperatures and developed frostbite to determine how long humans could survive with such an affliction, and to determine the effects of rotting and gangrene on human flesh.
* having experiments performed upon prisoners to determine the relationship between temperature, burns, and human survival.
* being placed into centrifuges and spun until dead.
* having animal blood injected and the effects studied.
* being exposed to lethal doses of x-ray radiation.
* having various chemical weapons tested on prisoners inside gas chambers.
* being injected with sea water to determine if it could be a substitute for saline.

Biological warfare

Japanese scientists performed tests on prisoners with plague, cholera, smallpox, botulism and other diseases. This research led to the development of the defoliation bacilli bomb and the flea bomb used to spread the bubonic plague. Some of these bombs were designed with ceramic (porcelain) shells, an idea proposed by Ishii in 1938. These bombs enabled Japanese soldiers to launch biological attacks, infecting agriculture, reservoirs, wells, and other areas with anthrax, plague-carrier fleas, typhoid, dysentery, cholera, and other deadly pathogens. During biological bomb experiments, scientists dressed in protective suits would examine the dying victims. Infected food supplies and clothing were dropped by airplane into areas of China not occupied by Japanese forces. In addition, poisoned food and candies were given out to unsuspecting victims and children, and examined.

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)

Image

Director:
Martin Scorsese

Odlichan dokumentarac Martina Scorsezea o meni omiljenim ranim radovima Boba Dylana dok je bio klinac - folk genije, pure i clean skroz i nije imao rok bend iza sebe i tripovo svashta. Znachi chista akustika, milina jedna. E to je za mene chist pank : pesme poput Blowin' in the wind, Hard rain, Mr. Tambourin Man, Only a Pawn in their game, The times are changin', Masters of war itd. Awesome.

No Direction Home is a documentary film by Martin Scorsese that traces the life of Bob Dylan, and his impact on American popular music and culture of the 20th century. The film does not cover Dylan’s entire career; rather, it focuses on his beginnings, his rise to fame in the 1960s, his transformation from an acoustic guitar-based musician and performer to an electric guitar-influenced sound and his “retirement” from touring in 1966 following an infamous motorcycle accident. The film was first presented on television in both the United States (as part of the PBS American Masters series) and the United Kingdom (as part of the BBC Two Arena series) on September 26–27 2005. A DVD version of the film and accompanying soundtrack album (The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No Direction Home: The Soundtrack) were released that same month.

The project eventually titled as No Direction Home began to take shape in 1995 when Dylan’s manager, Jeff Rosen, began scheduling interviews with Dylan’s friends and associates. Among those interviewed were poet Allen Ginsberg and folk musician Dave Van Ronk, both of whom died before the film was ever completed. Dylan’s old girlfriend Suze Rotolo also granted a rare interview, and she later told Rolling Stone Magazine that she was very pleased with the project’s results. Dylan himself also sat for ten hours in a relaxed and open conversation with Rosen in 2000.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, an unnamed source close to the project claimed that Dylan himself had no involvement with the project apart from the interview, saying that “[Dylan] has no interest in this . . . Bob truly does not look back.” However, work on the first installment of Dylan’s autobiography, Chronicles, Vol. 1, did overlap production of the project, though it’s unclear how much, if any, influence Chronicles may have had on No Direction Home.

Though raw material was being gathered for the project, Rosen needed someone to edit and shape it into a quality picture, and celebrated filmmaker Martin Scorsese was approached to ‘direct’ the documentary planned from the project. Scorsese eventually agreed and came aboard in 2001.

In the meantime, Dylan’s office gathered hundreds of hours of historical film footage dating from the time covered in No Direction Home. These included a scratchy recording of Dylan’s high school rock band, his 1965 screen test for Andy Warhol, and newly-discovered footage of the famous Manchester Free Trade Hall concert from May 17, 1966, when an angry fan John Cordwell, called out “Judas!” just before Dylan and the Hawks performed “Like A Rolling Stone.” Shot by D.A. Pennebaker, the onstage, color footage was found in 2004 in a pile of water-damaged film recovered from Dylan’s vaults.

No Direction Home received a Peabody Award in 2006, and a Columbia-duPont Award in January 2007.

The King of Kong - A Fistful of Quarters (2007)

Image

In the early 1980s, legendary Billy Mitchell set a Donkey Kong record that stood for almost 25 years. This documentary follows the assault on the record by Steve Wiebe, an earnest teacher from Washington who took up the game while unemployed. The top scores are monitored by a cadre of players and fans associated with Walter Day, an Iowan who runs Funspot, an annual tournament. Wiebe breaks Mitchell's record in public at Funspot, and Mitchell promptly mails a video tape of himself setting a new record. So Wiebe travels to Florida hoping Mitchell will face him for the 2007 Guinness World Records. Will the mind-game-playing Mitchell engage; who will end up holding the record?

Onibus 174 (2002)
aka Bus 174

Image
