Red Hill (2010)

No Country for Old Men" i "The Proposition". A sudeći premta izvrsnom traileru, i ja osobno bih se mogao složiti sa tom konstatacijom. U filmu nastupaju nama uglavnom nepoznati Australski glumci Ryan Kwanten ("True Blood"), Steve Bisley ("Mad Max") i Tom E. Lewis ("The Proposition").

RADNJA
When a young police officer, Constable Shane Cooper, relocates to the small high-country town of Red Hill with his pregnant wife, he does so in the hope of starting a new family. But when news of a prison break in the city sends the local law enforcement officers into a panic, Shanes first day on duty quickly goes from bad to worse.
Enter Jimmy Conway, a convicted murderer serving life behind bars, he returns to the isolated outpost seeking revenge. Now caught in the middle of what quickly becomes a horrifying blood bath, Shane will be forced to take the law into his own hands if he is to survive. A tight action/thriller, Red Hill unfolds over the course of a single day. Told with explosive action and chilling violence, the story is a modern day western set in high-country Australia.

A evo i par recenzija...

Saddle up; the movie Western has returned. Only this one, "Red Hill," is set in Australia, not the American West...You might be reminded of the Coen brothers' "No Country for Old Men" (2007), in which another strange-looking dude unleashes a vengeful bloodbath.

A serving of True Blood's Ryan Kwanten in his native accent is the chief selling point of this picturesque, contentedly imitative Australian Western/thriller/Coen-brothers homage, the feature debut of writer-director Patrick Hughes.

Like the best westerns, Red Hill is a stripped-down morality tale; like the best horror movies, its true monsters remain cloaked until the final reel.

Morally simplistic yet viscerally effective, "Red Hill" is an Australian tip of the Stetson to the vengeance western, in this case a tale of payback engineered as a blood-spattered link between a country's old sins and a hopefully more enlightened future.

I can’t recommend this film enough, and here’s hoping that it’s going to get the wide, theatrical release it clearly deserves – hopefully the star power of Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood” is massive at the moment) will help it out. Either way, it’s a powerful film, and it needs to be seen.

In the end Red Hill isn't just a thrillingly violent western - though it fulfils this role with ease - but also a powerful morality tale that looks not only at Australia's bloody history but our own weaknesses as well. Its message, cleverly expressed though slight-of-hand direction, is that we are all capable of doing wrong and sometimes it takes inner strength and self-belief to be right. It's a maturity all the more surprising for the fast-paced action around it, in a movie that more than deserves to break into the mainstream.

Do you miss old school revenge westerns and vintage gritty cop thrillers like I do? Where are the new High Plains Drifter's, or the modern day Report To The Commissioner's? Well pine no more, because Australian writer/director Patrick Hughes is riding over the hill, guns blazing, and lights flashing to save the day with his debut feature, Red Hill...Commercial director Patrick Hughes bursts into feature films in a massive way with this mash-up of brutal style western and grimy police action thriller. Hearkening back to films like the aforementioned High Plains Drifter and Report To The Commissioner, factor in other titles like Chato's Land, The Chant Of Jimmy Blacksmith, Buck And The Preacher, Straw Dogs, and White Line Fever, and you are in the neighborhood. If you miss bad ass old school style shoot 'em up's, with solid characters and stocked with actors that actually look like real people, Red Hill is definitely for you. Hughes shares the sensibilities of countryman and fellow director Peter Weir, as well as other greats like Sam Peckinpah, John Ford, and Don Siegel while also updating the style and bringing his own spin to the violent mythologies laid down by the greats before him.
jewel in the already amazing programming here at Fantastic Fest 2010, I was left pretty stunned, and wanting another fix as soon as the credits started to crawl. Luckily this is the beginning of a thematic trilogy, so Patrick Hughes is just getting started. As a film geek and now a total convert, I'll be counting the days until he has another film in the can.
Sony has picked up Red Hill for theatrical distribution and is set to hit US theaters on November the 5'th. Do yourselves a favor, get your ass into a seat. This movie deserves and needs to be seen by discerning action and western fans.

Preporuka...
