Wow, I did NOT see this one coming. DISTRICT 9 is one summer would-be blockbuster that has more or less flown under my radar the last few months. The trailers, and the posters have been interesting, but to me this looked like just another CLOVERFIELD retread that would be good for some light entertainment, but nothing else.
The buzz on this film only really got started about a month ago when it was previewed at Comic-Con. The buzz coming out of that screening was pretty much a studio's dream, and after finally seeing the film myself I can honestly say that this stands with STAR TREK, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, and UP, as one of the finest films of the summer.
I find it particularly satisfying to see a film like this after suffering through the brainlessness of GI JOE, and TRANSFORMERS 2, as it shows that there are filmmakers out there that are able to deliver entertaining action films, which don't completely sacrifice brain for brawn but keep a steady mixture of the two. I really can't recommend this one enough and it should be considered a must see.
RATING: 9/10

It’s a remarkable film that’s fresh, invigorating and inventive. It takes many queues from classic filmmaking while creating it’s own identity. District 9 is movie making perfection that stems from one obvious ingredient – heart. While Sam Raimi continues to produce garbage with his Ghost House Pictures (Boogeyman, Messengers, The Grudge - sans the exceptional 30 Days of Night), Peter Jackson has shown that he is determined to produce quality films, along with making his satchels of cash. It’s understood that investors want to make their money back, but wouldn’t it be a better world if that was done by making a good movie instead of making one that is generic, and appeals to all audiences?
District 9 is hands down the best film of the summer and has made me love movies all over again. It’s engaging, explosive, and pure nonstop awesomeness – it’s what big summer movies are supposed to be. Drop everything and go see this, I guarantee satisfaction.

Bottom Line: A genuinely original science fiction film that grabs you immediately, not letting go until the final shot.
Combining the very best of the postwar sci-fi movies with their trenchant political undertones and pulse-pounding dynamism and contemporary movie technology that can blend aliens seamlessly into a realistic human world of urban and moral decay, "District 9" flirts with greatness. This science fiction film from South African-born Canadian Neill Blomkamp, a protege of Peter Jackson, who produced the film, stumbles in a few crucial areas but even so it's a helluva movie. No true fan of science fiction -- or, for that matter, cinema -- can help but thrill to the action, high stakes and suspense built around a very original chase movie.

Shot and set in Blomkamp's native South Africa, "District 9" imagines a present-day scenario in which humans and aliens are forced into an uneasy co-existence and, predictably, bring out the violent worst in each other. As scripted by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, the result reps a remarkably cohesive hybrid of creature feature and satirical mockumentary that elaborates on the helmer's 2005 short "Alive in Jo'burg," borrows plot points from 1988's "Alien Nation" and takes its emotional cues from "E.T."

There is no doubt that District 9 is largely a serious, political piece with flashes of Cronenburg and even Ridley Scott, creating a sci-fi tapestry that will be watched for years to come. What little humor is injected is always at someone’s expense (whether human or alien), the type of moment where you say, “Oh, that’s just wrong!” but laugh anyway; and the rest of the time it's probably just our reaction to good old fashioned gore sprayed across the screen. The film did seem a tad long, but as stated before, making it through slight doldrums brings rich rewards of eye candy the likes of which I haven’t seen in a great long time.
It should also be mentioned that while the political statements are clearly made, they are not heavy-handed and repeated with ridiculous frequency. The message is clear and exists as a mere overtone to the film, which focuses unflinchingly on Wikus, for better or for worse. This is not Star Trek. This is definitely not Starship Troopers. District 9 is a thoroughly original, super realistic, sci-fi-tinted tale of woe; and at the end of the day we have to applaud such originality as loudly as we possibly can.

Pogledah film upravo, dao bi mu 8.5/10.
+
