Two brothers return to the cult they fled from years ago to discover that the group's beliefs may be more sane than they once thought

A demanding, rewarding picture with moments of unusual terror and awe, offering a science fiction/horror scenario on a literally cosmic scale which boils down to a study of a complicated sibling relationship.

Hiccups aside, though, The Endless rapidly develops from a mysterious, elliptical story about cult survivors and strained relationships into a much larger and stranger movie, essentially the Aliens to Resolution's original Alien.

They say 'fear of the unknown, is the greatest fear there is'. Well, The Endless is that type of film that uses the unknown to their benefit to increase the fear and underlining mystery of the film. Centered on two brother trying to reconnect with their cultist upbringing with a very H.P. Lovecraft inspired context. It's an excellent film that uses it's thought provoking plotting to it's surreal nature of the story and the philosophical nature of the cult members to provide a great sense of drama, conflict and mystery. More of less they say 'minimalism is more' and here it's just about right, filled with terrific writing, acting directing and cinematography, 'The Endless' is a film that should be seen by a large number of audiences to appreciate as one of this year's best. Luckily enough I was able to see it at the Melbourne International Film Festival when I did.

Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson are a writing-and-directing duo who specialize in genre-bending sci-fi(ish) horror films, like their first two features, Spring and Resolution. For their third effort, The Endless, the duo takes on starring duties as well, playing a pair of brothers who fled a doomsday cult they were raised in, but who choose to return to the compound years later after receiving a strange tape from one of the other members. When they get back, the brothers find everyone mysteriously well-aged, and start experiencing a series of phenomena that make them question whether or not the cult teachings were right all along. The Endless premieres on April 6.
