'Annabelle' Sequel Eyes $30+ Million Opening as Summer Slow Down Continues

WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation is off to an excellent start, bringing in an estimated $15 million on Friday (including $4 million from Thursday previews) on its way to a weekend around $35 million if not more. It's also great news for director David F. Sandberg who helmed last year's hit Lights Out for WB. That film went on to gross nearly $150 million worldwide on a budget under $5 million. The film received a "B" CinemaScore, matching the score for the first film.

This time, the horror movie Annabelle: Creation might get banned. The Bureau of Censorship in Lebanon, a division of the General Security, asked cleric men to watch the movie to see whether it should get banned or not.

Apparently, there are many scenes that offend the Christian faith. Thus, it was decided that Annabelle 2 should not be screened in movie theaters in Lebanon.

However, there are several steps that need to be taken in order to ban a movie. A six-ministry-member committee should make decision. Then the ultimate decision is made by the Interior Minister.

For now, the movie is put on hold and the General Bureau has not released an official announcement yet.

With its own tight budget of just $15 million, in just two weeks it has crossed $96 million internationally, putting its total at $160 million. With $30 million more coming here in the States, Creation will already be just $60 million behind Get Out‘s worldwide numbers.
