Several college students spend the weekend in an abandoned cabin in the woods, accidentally unleashing an evil terror. In this comedic take on the 80s horror franchise, characters and demons sing and dance to songs written specifically for the musical. And, as in the films, Ash is there to dish out his various one liners and fight the never ending Army of Darkness. Audiences are typically warned that the first few rows may get wet as the play calls for large amounts of stage blood to be splattered . (Ponchos are provided during the 15 minute intermission before Act Two).

Producer Don Carmody is in negotiations with Spider-Man director Sam Raimi to bring the audience-pleaser Evil Dead: The Musical to the big screen.

Conceived by George Reinblatt, Christopher Bond, Frank Cipolla and Melissa Morris, the stage interpretation of Raimi's cult classic horror trilogy was originally began in Toronto and Montreal and has since gone off-Broadway.

Original directors Bond and choreographer Hinton Battle are lined up to co-direct the film version, which will be presented in 3-D.

Carmody tells Screen International he hopes to shoot the film in the spring of next year in Toronto with some of the original cast.

Serious rights issues still need to be resolved, however.

This news first hit a few days ago, but we just have to spread it further: Screen Daily reports that Canadian producer Don Carmody is working to turn EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL, on which he was an investor, into a feature film. Not only that, they’ll be doing it in 3-D! Christopher Bond, who directed the show and wrote it with George Reinblatt, Frank Cipolla and Melissa Morris, will helm the movie with Hinton Battle, who choreographed the New York City production. Carmody, whose big-screen credits range from David Cronenberg’s early SHIVERS and RABID to SILENT HILL, and play producers Bill Franzblau and Jeffrey Latimer are currently wrangling with Sam Raimi to secure the rights to get their version of EVIL DEAD before the cameras.

EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL combines the storylines of the first two films in the modern-classic franchise, playing it out against a series of tunes like “Cabin in the Woods,” “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed By Candarian Demons” and “Do the Necronomicon.” Audience members sitting in the front rows, known as the “Splatter Zone,” got drenched with fake blood—thus shooting the movie in 3-D only makes sense. Carmody and co. are hoping to shoot next spring in Toronto with some of the original cast on board (no doubt headed by Ryan Ward, whose terrific spin on Bruce Campbell graced both the Montreal and NYC stages).
