25 disc Kurosawa box set from Criterion

Post by HorrorHR » 26 Aug 2009, 22:25

Last month’s newsletter gave us a hint and now ThePlaylist has confirmed that The Criterion Collection will be releasing a 25 film boxset of Akira Kurosawa films “by the end of the year” to commemorate the director’s 100th birthday. No details were given.

Some of the details for Criterion’s upcoming 25 disc Akira Kurosawa box set have finally surfaced and, once again, ThePlaylist has the goods. The box, released to celebrate what would have been the filmmaker’s 100th birthday, is due out on December 8th and will include 5 titles that have not yet been released:

Madadayo ,The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail, The Most Beautiful, Sanshiro Sugata, & Sanshiro Sugata Part II
The other 20 movies included in the set that have been released:

The Bad Sleep Well, Dodes’ka-den, Drunken Angel, The Hidden Fortress, High and Low, Ikiru, Kagemusha, The Lower Depths, Rashomon, Red Beard, Sanjuro, Seven Samurai, Stray Dog, Throne of Blood, Yojimbo, Scandal, I Live in Fear, The Idiot, No Regrets for Our Youth, & One Wonderful Sunday

No word yet on whether these will be bare bones discs or if they’ll match their already released counterparts. The suggested retail price of $400 seems to suggest that they’ll be bare bones, like Criterion’s Eclipse boxes or Essential Art House releases. It'll also be interesting to see if the titles not previously released will get individual releases. Maybe as another Eclipse box set? Check back for more details as they arrive.
